Why is it that many travel agents will advise potential customers against visiting certain countries, and also refuse to help them with finding information about the place you want to go? Most of the time travel agents are great, and will do their utmost to help you. Yet if there is the slightest sign of a problem in a country, everyone is warned off of going and this can ruin the tourist trade in many areas.
For several years, people were warned off of going to the Philippines saying that it was war torn when it was not. Admittedly, there may have been some national conflict which was only present on one or two of the thousands of islands! The same goes for kidnappings… there was one a few years ago, and now people are advised against going due to the chance of getting kidnapped. How many people get kidnapped in our countries on a regular basis? More than one in ten years I would have guessed!
Although it is understandable that travel agents have the safety and welfare of their customers in mind, sometimes it all gets blown out of proportion. I am sure there are many places that have suffered due to the ill advice given to potential travellers as they are choosing their destinations.
