Excessive Killing By Trawlers

The Before and After of Trawling

Have you ever seen when the trawlers come back in with their catch at the end of the day? Although these days there are strict guidelines on the sizes of fish and other seafood that we are allowed to catch, it seems to be that these regulations are not always in practice. Although the trawlers come in with fish that are in accordance with the laws, what about all the millions of other little creatures that they catch along the way? Yes, they are released into the sea again but not in the same state that they were in originally!
A Dead Dolphin caught Up in Trawling MayhemSometimes when the trawlers come back in, you can see a river of silver on the waters behind them. All the millions of fish that are not big enough to keep have been released, but they have all been deprived of the natural surroundings so lie in the water dead or dying. These laws are in place to ensure that our fish stocks are not depleted, yet so many of them are dying needlessly at the same time. If you stop to talk to some of the people who work on these giant trawlers, many will tell you that their nets are too close to the bottom thus destroying anything in their wake. Bring back the old traditional fishing methods or come up with something that will not diminish our marine life entirely!!
